Griet, Thorsten, Jara and Lisa: We wish you a Happy New Year 2007!

Our nest

We now live in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. We found a lovely house at the outskirts of the city, surrounded by some forests, cocoa plantations and lots of other nice(r) houses. It is a calm and beautiful area we like very much. It still has the flair of and african village and only very few white people. To the center it is only about 20 minutes drive so it's ideal for us. Jara found a nice crêche about 10 minutes from us where she can play with the other kids and enjoy her little slide.

We wish you a Happy New Year 2007!

This year will be extremely exciting for us with lot's of changes. Griet will finish her Masters in Public Health in April, our baby will be born in May, we will marry in August and then go off on Honeymoon probably September or October.

We wish you all a very exciting year too and hope you stay healthy, have something interesting to do and enjoy your life. Our thoughts are with you all and we hope seeing you all this year!

Broederlijk Delen (BD) works with 15 local partners in Cameroon in the field of sustainable rural development. Our geographical focus is on three regions: The Extreme North, North West, and the Center-South. Due to its cultural and environmental diversity, the issues addressed by BD are very different in the three areas. The Extreme North is Savannah like and most important issues are the management of the scarce water resources and the promotion of appropriate agriculture techniques that take into account the fragility of the environment. In the North West the environment is mountainous and issues are mainly related to erosion protection and improved soil fertility. In the Center-South, we are speaking of the tropical forest belt. Here Slash-and Burn practices dominate with increasingly high impacts on the environment and the livelihoods of the poor. Through the introduction of crop rotation and improved soil management techniques, farmers are able to produce higher yields on the same field reducing the need for further clearcuts of the forests.
In all three regions the establishment of improved marketing approaches for agricultural products are supported to ensure farmers have fair and higher incomes.
Presently five development workers and three volunteers are working for our local partners in Cameroon.
